Two of my friends have already gone to Hong Kong before so our itinerary is not the usual places where tourists would go. Feeling local, we headed to Lugard Road Lookout to hike a little bit and chase the beautiful sunrise of Hong Kong.
How to Go to Lugard Road Lookout
My friends and I reached Lugard Road Lookout at 6:45 AM by booking Uber from Sheraton Hotel. Here are the other ways on how you can go to the Lugard Road Lookout.
Option 1: Peak Tram + Walk (Recommended)
- Start at Central MTR Station: Take Exit J2 and walk to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus on Garden Road.
- Ride the Peak Tram: Operating from 7:00 AM to 12:00 AM, the tram ascends to The Peak in about 7 minutes.
- Walk to Lugard Road: Upon arrival, exit the Peak Tower and locate Lugard Road to the left of the tower.
- Enjoy a 13-minute (1 km) shaded walk along Lugard Road to reach the lookout point.
Option 2: Bus + Walk
- From Central: Board Bus 15 from Exchange Square Bus Terminus to The Peak.
- From Admiralty: Take Bus 15 from Admiralty (East) Bus Terminus to The Peak.

Our Lugard Road Lookout Experience
The hike from the entrance of The Peak, where Uber dropped us off, didn’t take long. The weather felt cool and windy when we arrived. We took our time, walking leisurely for about 20 minutes to reach the Lookout. The path was mostly flat and shaded, making it ideal for all ages. Many describe it as a peaceful and scenic walk surrounded by lush greenery.
This was only the third time in my life that I watched a sunrise somewhere other than home. Yet, the feeling remained the same—what I love most about it is the blend of fresh, cool air and the golden sun glistening softly without hurting my eyes. What made this moment even more special was the view: a sweeping panorama of the city and water below.
The best part was seeing Victoria Harbour stretch out like a shimmering sea, surrounded by towering skyscrapers—yet I stood above it all, encircled by trees and massive rocks, completely immersed in nature.
Yes, you can experience this for free; there’s no entrance fee! Some people were there for a run, others were walking their dogs, and a few were taking photos. But honestly, it wasn’t crowded since we arrived early.
Conclusion
Whether you’re into nature, photography, or simply looking for a quiet moment above the city, this spot offers something special—and best of all, it’s free. I’d definitely come back and recommend it to anyone visiting Hong Kong.
