Looking to sharpen your mountain driving skills without burning a hole in your wallet on toll fees? That was exact mission when I planned a weekend road trip up to Tanay, Rizal.

Since my mom was riding shotgun, the trip had one non-negotiable rule: we needed to include a church visit.

Since I knew Antipolo Cathedral as the only famous church in Rizal, I did a quick search on Google Maps, which led me to a hidden haven tucked along the Marilaque Highway—Regina RICA. It turned out to be the perfect blend of scenic winding roads, peaceful mountain air, and spiritual refreshment.

What is Regina RICA

Regina RICA (Regina Rosarii Institute for Contemplation in Asia) is a sprawling 13.5-hectare sanctuary managed by the Dominican Sisters of Regina Rosarii in the Philippines. Designed as a haven for quiet prayer, healing, and nature appreciation, it immediately wraps you in a sense of calm the moment you pull up.

Standing tall on the highest hill is the sanctuary’s crown jewel: a massive 71-foot statue of Our Lady, Regina Rosarii, watching over the lush green valley like a silent guardian.

What to Expect at Regina RICA

The 71-Foot Our Lady, Regina Rosarii Statue

To reach the 71-foot statue, you walk up the “S-Trail” (Rosary Trail)—a paved, tree-lined path that winds gently up the hillside. It’s designed for quiet reflection with sweeping views of the Rizal mountains. Even though scaffolding surrounded the statue for maintenance during our visit, the site retained a deeply sacred and humbling energy.

Sulod (Adoration Chapel)

Directly beneath Mary’s mantle inside the statue’s base lies Sulod, an underground adoration chapel. Guides invite small groups upstairs for a brief, guided silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Stepping inside feels like stepping completely out of the noisy world.

Unlike traditional enclosed cathedrals, the chapel features open-air sides and large glass panels that allow natural mountain breezes and surrounding greenery to frame the sanctuary. The focal point of the interior is an altar flanked by handcrafted artwork created through collaborations with prominent Filipino artists and artisans.

Stations of the Cross & Candle Chapels

Wandering through the park-like grounds, you’ll find outdoor Stations of the Cross and dedicated candle chapels. Lighting colorful intention candles against a backdrop of open skies and mountain peaks adds a beautiful layer of solemnity to the walk.

Nature & Quiet Spots

Beyond the religious shrines, you’ll find organic gardens, koi ponds, and open green fields where friendly sheep graze.

During the outdoor Mass facing the statue, the priest spoke about how “everything happens for a reason.” Right on cue, I glanced at the guy sitting in front of me—his shirt literally read God’s Plan.

Moments later, as the homily touched on the need to “only be still,” actual sheep wandered out onto the field. I had to double-check if they were real—and they were! It felt like a funny, gentle nudge from above to just sit back, relax, and be a good follower. Message received, Lord!

The Footprints and the Pathway

On our way back down from the statue, we decided to join their footprint donation drive. For ₱500, a volunteer sets fresh wet cement onto a paving brick, and you step onto it barefoot to leave a permanent impression. These custom bricks will line the pathways of the sanctuary’s future expansion. (Don’t worry, there are water faucets right next to the station to wash off!).

The donation also lets you draw two inspirational notes from a fishbowl, and both hit surprisingly close to home:

  • Note 1: “You want success? Push yourself beyond your comfort zone…” A direct patama to my current goals and daily time-management struggles.

  • Note 2: “Power, prestige, & popularity—these will pass. Build up your family and friends…” A wholesome reminder to keep investing in my closest inner circle and high school barkada.

Pasilungan

The on-site eatery, Pasilungan (Ilonggo for “shelter”), serves wholesome vegetarian dishes. Try their RICA Veggie Sandwich or grab a cold glass of mais con hielo. (Note: Since it’s strictly vegetarian, I ended up grabbing some quick chicken and liempo outside afterward for mom!).

Before leaving, visit the on-site shop to pick up blessed rosaries, religious medals, color-coded intention candles, essential oils, or local products made by the sisters.

Essential Visitor Tips & Ground Rules

Because Regina RICA is a working sanctuary, management enforces a few rules to protect the peaceful atmosphere:

  • Dress Code: Modest attire is required. Sleeveless tops, tank tops, mini-skirts, short shorts, and sheer clothing aren’t allowed (pants, sleeved shirts, or knee-length skirts are best). Cover-up wraps are available near the entrance if needed.
  • Sanctuary Etiquette: Keep your voice low on the trails and maintain total silence inside Sulod. Photos are allowed on outdoor paths, but strictly banned inside sacred prayer rooms. Smoking, vaping, and pets are not permitted.
  • Food Stop (Pasilungan): The on-site eatery, Pasilungan (Ilonggo for “shelter”), serves wholesome vegetarian dishes. Try their RICA Veggie Sandwich or grab a cold glass of mais con hielo. (Note: Since it’s strictly vegetarian, I ended up grabbing some quick chicken and liempo outside afterward for mom!).

Practical Tips for Visitors

  • What to Pack: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll be walking uphill. Bring an umbrella for sun or light rain protection, cash for parking and small donations, and a light jacket for breezy hill weather.
