“Kanto” is a Tagalog colloquial term for a street corner, often carrying a not-so-good connotation as it’s typically associated with bystanders. However, Kanto Freestyle Breakfast has been receiving plenty of positive feedback on social media. Many satisfied customers rave about their delicious and satisfying meals.
I was intrigued and eager to try their all-breakfast menu (yes, they’re open 24/7). Unfortunately, their branches in Mandaluyong, Libis, and Marikina seemed too far from where I live. Luckily, I received an invite from Ross of Wazzup Pilipinas to visit one of the Kapitolyo, Pasig restaurants — giving me a great reason to finally make the trip!
Kanto Freestyle Breakfast is the brainchild of Chef Juanta, and on August 7, 2014, they introduced their newest food offerings to bloggers. We were all excited to sample the new dishes and drinks.

Kanto Freestyle Sandwiches
Open-Faced Chicken Longganisa
The Open-Faced Chicken Longganisa Sandwich with Hollandaise Sauce has caramelized onion and onion leeks. Well, I have a special relationship with Hollandaise sauce, so I totally love this sandwich.

Croque Monsieur
Meanwhile, the Croque Monsieur is a classic French ham and cheese sandwich, while their version of the Croque Madame comes with an egg on top. According to legend, the egg resembles an old-fashioned woman’s hat, which is why the Croque Madame is considered the “female” counterpart, and the Croque Monsieur the “male” version.
These sandwiches were average, mainly due to the type of bread they used.

Kanto Freestyle Rice
Bacon Congee
The Bacon Congee topped with a poached egg truly surprised us. Typically, congee add-ons include tripe, pork, and boiled eggs, so this unique twist was unexpected — but the combination worked wonderfully.
The Arroz a la Cubana tasted great as well, though it wasn’t particularly memorable.

Arroz a la Cubana
Banana never goes out in the picture with Arroz a la Cubana. Try this from Kanto Freestyle Breakfast, a restaurant in Kapitolyo that is frequented by the people around Pasig.

Kanto Freestyle Pancakes
Blueberry and Strawberry Pancake
Of course, the breakfast would not be complete without pancakes! Their pancake variations taste quite similar, so it’s really just a matter of choosing your preferred toppings. I went for the Blueberry and Strawberry pancakes — what would you choose?

Choco Chip Pancake

Ube White Chocolate Pancake

Kanto Freestyle Dessert
Grilled Suman with Ube White Chocolate and Goya Ganache
Grilled Suman with Ube White Chocolate and Goya Ganache is essentially a common rice cake in the Philippines, but with a twist. Kanto puts ube, white chocolate, and Goya to add sweetness to the dish.

Kanto Freestyle Location
The place is a garage-turned-dine-in restaurant, which makes it quite easy to miss. In fact, I walked past it and ended up at the other end of the street before realizing I had missed the establishment. Thankfully, I called Geeky Kitch to help me find the place.
I arrived at the venue in the afternoon, but the lights were still off. However, the place transforms into a chic restaurant by night. Unfortunately, the restaurant is not air-conditioned.

More and more people started coming in (perhaps it’s a go-to spot after work or school), so we decided to step outside to give other diners a place to sit. Interestingly, about 70% of the diners that day were yuppies, while 30% were students.
From what I saw on their menu, the prices are affordable, and the serving portions are fair. The staff greeted us cheerfully, adding to the welcoming vibe. The place had a bit of a call center environment — it’s always morning at Kanto!
Kanto was definitely a hit for me, and I’m sure you’ll like it, too!
