Shifen Old Street is a popular tourist attraction in Taiwan that originally served as a coal mining hub during Japan’s colonial period. Despite its historical roots, the street has retained its old-world charm, captivating both locals and foreigners alike. To make the most of your visit, here are four things you can do in Shifen Old Street:

Four Things to Do in Shifen
Make a Wish at Shifen Old Street
Releasing a sky lantern is a popular activity for visitors in Shifen. Using a calligraphy brush, you can paint your wishes on the lantern, and the vendors will assist you in releasing it into the sky. Each color on the lantern’s sides carries a specific meaning, with corresponding prices. See the picture below for details.

You might also want to take home a cute version of the lantern as a souvenir. These adorable lanterns light up when shaken, making them a charming keepsake. Souvenirs are priced between 50-75 NTD.
Fill Your Tummy
As you walk toward the train station, you’ll find plenty of interesting food options. One must-try is the Taiwanese burger (gua bao). The bread resembles the one used for siopao, but the flavors are incomparable. Each ingredient perfectly complements the other — so much so that I ended up ordering another one to take home to the Philippines!

Quench your thirst by what Taiwan is known for… milk tea!

Meanwhile, the weather was freezing but the peanut ice cream will shove off the coolness you are feeling. It’s known in Taiwan, so better try it.

The last but not the least is the stall located at the most end of the old street – the chicken stuffed with rice! The coated sauce was done right and the stuffed rice is savory. Definitely, a must try.
Try all of these; it won’t hurt your pocket!

Hear the Sounds of Shifen’s Raging Waterfalls
To reach Shifen Waterfall, you can either take a 20-minute walk or ask your tour guide or driver to drop you off directly. Although the waterfall stands only 20 meters tall, its impressive 40-meter width has earned it the nickname “The Niagara Falls of Taiwan.”
For the best experience, visit on a sunny day to witness the stunning rainbow effect created by the powerful cascading water. In the picture below, it was raining, so the iconic “rainbow pond” was absent. Nevertheless, the waterfall’s breathtaking beauty still takes center stage.
Strike a Pose
With the liberty of loitering on the railway, who would not think of taking a chance of a cool Instagram-worthy photo?

Also, the sturdy gigantic bridge suggests an eye-catching perspective shot.

Not just that, using the heights from the bridge going to the waterfalls, you can have a nice snapshot.

It was no wonder that Shifen is the most favorite spot of the tourist next to Jiufen. There are so many things you can do in just one place. Come and experience it yourself!
