When planning our trip to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia a friend who had previously visited recommended Likas Square Apartment Hotel. Since she traveled with a large group, she knew it would be a great option for my party of 10 people — and she was right! This hotel offers spacious units at an affordable price, making it perfect for big groups.

Our travel plans hit a small bump when Cebu Pacific informed us that our flight had been rescheduled, which meant adjusting our hotel booking as well. Fortunately, Likas Square Apartment Hotel responded to my email immediately and updated our reservation without any hassle — a great first impression!

This Kota Kinabalu hotel easily amended my booking because of the flight changes.

From the airport, it took us only 15 minutes to reach the hotel, and there was no traffic at the time.

While the lobby wasn’t particularly impressive, stepping into our unit felt like entering a home away from home!

My mom’s friends and I were pleasantly surprised by how spacious and posh the unit was — we loved it!

Likas Square Hotel can give you three rooms in one unit if you are traveling in big group.

One bedroom has their own shower room and then there’s another shower room near the living room.

The kitchen was well-equipped with essential appliances, including:

However, there was no microwave oven, which would have been a handy addition.

If you are looking for a Kota Kinabalu hotel that has kitchen, an apartment hotel is recommended.

On the ground floor, just behind the front office, there’s a grocery store — perfect for picking up snacks or essentials.

The pool area is also available for guests, but be sure to bring your own towel as they aren’t provided at the poolside.

Although I had planned an itinerary to maximize our time in Kota Kinabalu, we faced one big challenge: transportation.

Our visit coincided with Eid al-Fitr, a major holiday when many locals were on vacation, making it difficult to book drivers. Thankfully, the front desk staff went above and beyond to help us. Despite the holiday rush, she managed to arrange transportation for us for two days with two different drivers.

Without her help, we would’ve ended up stuck in two possible scenarios:

1.Staying idle inside the hotel.

2.Commuting from bus to bus — with my mom’s friends potentially voicing their endless complaints. 😂

Lesson Learned

This experience reminded me of the difference between traveling with younger friends versus those who are older.

With people in their 20s, spontaneous plans and cab rides are often enough.
But with people closer to my mom’s age, planning ahead with security in mind becomes essential.

I’ve learned that sometimes, as you get older, you’d rather avoid mistakes and uncertainties — and honestly, it does make trips a lot smoother.

Oh, how I’m already missing Kota Kinabalu! 😍
