Admit it — looking at a Korean restaurant’s menu can be a challenge for us Filipinos. We often don’t know if what we’re ordering will be delicious since we’re not too familiar with the dishes, right? We usually end up asking the waiters for their bestsellers just to satisfy our growling tummies.

My workmates and I visited Songdo’won restaurant in Pasay on a Friday night. It’s located beside Music 21, which suggests that after filling up, you can sing your heart out!

During our first visit, I didn’t get to take any pictures except for a groupie.

In our second visit, our Korean boss was not around so let the foodie soul take in!

The side dish is refillable. Filipinos love unlimited! Don’t be shy to ask what you love. In our group, we like the sweet nuts!

The picture below is the herb samgyeopsal (P350) uncooked. The waiters will assist you to grill. This one is a good choice if you want to have flavorful samgyupsal. How to enjoy it? Order a rice and take it as a viand or wrap it in the cabbage with the side dishes.

Samgyeopsal here in Songdo’won has a variety of flavors!

Tip: It is better to cut the cabbage before wrapping it out with the meat and side dishes so you can eat the “wrapped cabbage” whole like how sushi is eaten. That’s how Koreans do it!

Songdowon is a restaurant in Pasay that is almost always full house.

We were supposed to order haemul tang (seafood stew), but the waiter got it wrong and served us gopchang jeongol (₱600) instead. It’s a beef tripe stew with cabbage. It was brought to our table boiling in a hot pot, and I initially thought the seafood was just hidden underneath. Since the stew was made with red chili pepper sauce, we couldn’t see if the seafood we were expecting was there.

It was too late when we realized the mix-up, as we weren’t really familiar with the dish. Maybe our seafood stew ended up on someone else’s table — and we felt sorry if the waiter would get charged for the mistake. (I know how it feels to be charged.)

Gobchang jeongol tasted fine.

Eat authentic Korean cuisine at this restaurant in Pasay.

If you want bulgogi but refraining to eat red meat? You may try dak bulgogi as it is a chicken. The taste is perfectly right – savory and sweet!

Songdo’won is a typical Korean restaurant with grillers on the tables and distinct dining area divisions. Surprisingly, many Filipinos dine here, even though it’s a place you’d intentionally plan to visit — or “dadayuhin” as we say in our language.

We’ve been here twice, and it’s always a full house, with both Korean and Filipino diners! The food they offer has an authentic taste, so the prices are a bit higher. However, the servings are generous, ensuring every diner leaves the restaurant full. The service is fast, and even the owners are hands-on.

If only the waiter had taken our order correctly, I would have rated this restaurant even higher.
