The Chocolate Hills, located in Carmen, Bohol, aren’t the only attraction that tourists love to see. Bohol is also rich in beautiful coral reefs. One of the most popular diving spots in the Philippines can be found in Panglao.

So if you’re planning to train for diving or simply want to stay near Alona Beach, consider booking a hotel near Panglao.

In our case, my mother and I stayed at Marieli Suites for some business we had to attend to in May 2024.

The Rate and Reservation

I found this rustic, contemporary accommodation through Airbnb. The rate was ₱5,135.30 for 4 days and 3 nights. I chose this accommodation because it was much cheaper compared to other hotels I saw. Most of the other Airbnbs I found were closer to Alona Beach. Marieli Suites was more affordable because it’s about a 1-hour walk to Alona Beach, but only a 10-minute ride.

Transportation and Location

It’s near Panglao International Airport. However, the airport taxis are very expensive, even if your hotel is nearby. When I told them where we were headed, they quoted ₱500—que horror, lol!

Since I’m familiar with Bohol (my father’s birthplace), I already knew what to do. My mother and I walked outside the airport, where there’s a tricycle terminal along the roadside, although it’s a bit hard to spot. We managed to reach Marieli Suites for ₱250. (Prices may vary depending on your negotiation skills.)

When my mother and I went out during our stay, the accommodation had an

in-house tricycle service that could take you wherever you wanted to go. Tricycle fares usually range from ₱100–₱150 or more, depending on the location. If you know how to drive a motorbike, it would be better to rent one.

The Suites

From the main road, you pass through a rocky path to get to the suites. The property is very bright and airy with plenty of lights and wide, open spaces. It’s a single-story building.

On the right, you’ll find their restaurant, and on the left, the laundry area, where you can also avail of their services.

In front, there are tables and chairs under string lights where you can hang out. I noticed there’s an ongoing construction of a pool as well.

Outside the room, there are more tables with umbrellas—another cozy spot to sit and enjoy some fresh air.

While the entrance door to Marieli Suites remains open during the day, they lock it at night for security. The receptionist is also present in the evenings.

Service

The staff are very friendly and always greet you warmly. The receptionist was also helpful when I asked about nearby tourist spots.

I found out from Google that South Farm Panglao was close by, and when I asked him about it, he delightfully told me it wasn’t walking distance, lol.

Breakfast wasn’t included in our package, so we ordered from their restaurant. While the staff were polite, the food took a while to be served, lol.

The Room

I was impressed with the furniture and overall interior. The side lamp was from IKEA, and the other furniture pieces looked sturdy. Even the washroom had a modern design.

The room had a TV with Netflix and a good air conditioner.

The bed is also comfortable, just like the ones you experience in 5-star hotels.

The only thing I didn’t like was the cabinet—it didn’t have doors.

Recommendation

Marieli Suites Bed & Breakfast is a beautiful place to stay. It truly feels like home. Most of the time, the common areas were quiet—probably because guests were out partying elsewhere! I found the common area really pleasant; you wouldn’t feel like you were in a rural area at all. I might consider sleeping at this place again but I think I should better learn how to drive a motor for much more convenience.
