Melo’s is a famous Angus steak restaurant in Quezon City and Muntinlupa, run by Carmelo Santiago. After some time, his daughter, Cristina Santiago Rivera, opened a restaurant also named after her father, which we now know as Carmelo’s Wagyu Steak.

Carmelo’s Wagyu Steak is located on the ground floor of Greenbelt 5, among a row of restaurants with an al fresco dining area. Upon entering, the ambiance feels high-class — the kind of place a guy might take you to impress you. My officemates and I started discussing whether we’d want that scenario for a first date with someone new, but honestly, the thought kind of scared us. Aren’t we weird? Or are we?

Truthfully speaking, we were here because of the voucher we had in Metrodeal. The inclusions are the following:

6 oz US Angus Steak, soft rolls, soup or salad, and dessert for P799 instead of P1428

Our order took a while, but we didn’t mind waiting since a bread basket was served. The waiter politely asked if we preferred Caesar salad or creamy organic fresh mushroom and rich pumpkin soup. My colleagues praised the soup, so they encouraged me to try it. It was indeed creamy and flavorful. Meanwhile, my salad was… well, a salad.

The Angus steak arrived. It looked pale, but the criss-cross grill marks were a delightful sight. The sides included julienned carrots, string beans, and garlic mashed potatoes. The waiter also provided gravy on the side. The slab of beef appeared dry at first, but upon slicing, the juices flowed out. We savored each and every bite because it’s not every day we get to have steak for dinner. Even though it was just 6 oz of meat, we were already full.

We hadn’t thoroughly read what was included in our Metrodeal voucher, so after finishing our steak, we thought we were done — but then came dessert! Chocolate cake — oooh, I loved it. Fun fact: The owner is a pastry chef, so this sweet treat was extra special!

The restaurant can accommodate only a few guests — around 20 to 30 people, I guess. As mentioned earlier, the ambiance features soft lighting and pleasant music. The price, I must say, is quite expensive… I wouldn’t have dined here if it weren’t for the voucher we availed. The serving size was enough to fill our hungry tummies, and it wasn’t easy to finish since it felt quite heavy!

The waiter was attentive and kind. He even gave us a lot of gravy, prompting me to joke, “Kuya, KFC? Unli gravy?” We considered giving him an extra cookie, but since no bill jacket was provided (the bill was already settled), we didn’t get the chance.

Lastly, as for the taste — I’m no steak expert, but with all three of us feeling satisfied, I can confidently say we had a really good dinner.
